Begin a homegrown berry project with this pack of 200 strawberry seeds. Raise seedlings for sunny beds, raised gardens, or containers with drainage, and enjoy tending your plants from their first leaves onward.
Features
- Package: 200 seeds for planting.
- Perennial fruit plants for sunny growing spaces.
- Suitable for garden beds and containers with adequate drainage.
- Seed-grown strawberries develop slowly. Fruiting time depends on variety and growing conditions; a substantial harvest may not occur until a later season.
- Seeds only; live plants, harvested berries, pots, and accessories are not included.
Cold Stratification & Sowing
- Start indoors about 10–12 weeks before the last expected spring frost, allowing additional time for chilling.
- Cold stratification can help break dormancy. Place seeds in a labeled, sealed container with barely moist seed-starting medium and refrigerate at approximately 35–40°F for 3–4 weeks. Do not freeze.
- Scatter seeds on the surface of clean, pre-moistened seed-starting mix. Press gently into contact without burying them; light helps germination.
- Keep around 65–75°F in bright light. Mist gently or water from below to avoid displacing the tiny seeds.
- Maintain even moisture without waterlogging. Ventilate any clear cover regularly and remove it after emergence.
- Germination often takes 2–6 weeks and can be uneven.
- Move seedlings into individual pots once they have several true leaves.
- Gradually acclimate seedlings outdoors for 7–10 days, then transplant after frost danger has passed. Space plants approximately 12–18 inches apart, keeping crowns at soil level.
Care
- Choose at least 6–8 hours of direct sun daily and fertile, well-drained soil.
- Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development. Avoid standing water and burying the crowns.
- Water at soil level. Place clean straw mulch around plants to help keep fruit off bare soil without covering the crowns.
- Feed established plants with fertilizer labeled for strawberries according to its directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen.
- Remove unwanted runners where they crowd plants, maintain airflow, and clear spoiled fruit and damaged foliage.
- Allow pollinators access to flowers. Protect ripening berries with securely installed bird netting if needed.
- Provide winter protection suited to your climate. Container roots are more exposed to freezing than roots in the ground.
Harvest
Pick berries when fully ripe, gently clipping or pinching the stem above the fruit. Harvest regularly, handle gently, refrigerate promptly, and rinse just before eating.
Seed Disclaimer
