Bring a warm-season leafy green to your kitchen garden with Red Stripe Leaf Amaranth. Grow tender young leaves for salads or harvest larger leaves for stir-fries, soups, and other cooked dishes, much like spinach.
Features
- Package: 500 seeds.
- Warm-season annual grown for edible leaves and tender shoots.
- Green foliage with red markings.
- Suitable for vegetable beds, raised beds, and roomy containers with drainage.
- A spinach-like leafy vegetable, not true spinach.
- Seeds for planting only; live plants and harvested greens are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Direct sow after the last spring frost, once soil has warmed to at least 65°F. Warm soil around 70–85°F supports germination.
- Choose a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil. Work in finished compost and rake the surface fine.
- Sow thinly about 1/8 inch deep, cover lightly, and water gently.
- Keep the seedbed evenly moist, not soggy. Seedlings commonly emerge in 5–14 days under warm conditions.
- Thin plants to approximately 6–12 inches apart, with rows about 12–18 inches apart.
- For a continued supply of young leaves, sow small batches every 2–3 weeks while warm growing weather remains.
Care
- Provide full sun. Light afternoon shade can help in very hot, dry conditions.
- Water regularly to keep growth steady and leaves tender. Avoid prolonged drying out or waterlogged soil.
- Remove weeds while plants are small. Add a light mulch after seedlings are established, keeping it away from stems.
- Use compost or a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to its label; avoid excessive feeding.
- Check young leaves for chewing insects and aphids. Use methods labeled for edible crops and follow harvest intervals.
- No climbing support is needed. Protect plants from frost.
Harvest & Kitchen Use
- Pick young, tender leaves as plants become established. Leave enough foliage and the growing tip for continued growth.
- Harvest tender shoot tips to encourage branching, and remove developing flower heads when growing primarily for leaves.
- Wash harvested leaves thoroughly. Use tender young leaves in salads and cook larger leaves like spinach.
- Harvest regularly before leaves become tough. Refrigerate promptly after picking.
