Add late-day interest to your garden with this pack of 50 Broken Colors four o’clock seeds. These bushy plants produce trumpet-shaped flowers that typically open in the late afternoon and evening.
Features
- Package: 50 four o’clock seeds.
- Botanical name: Mirabilis jalapa.
- Selection: Broken Colors. Random mixed colors.
- Plant type: Frost-tender perennial, often grown as an annual in colder climates.
- Suitable for sunny beds, borders, and roomy containers with drainage.
- Seeds only; live plants, tubers, flowers, and pots are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours before sowing.
- Direct-sow outdoors after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed.
- Choose full sun and well-draining soil. Sow approximately ½ inch deep and water gently.
- Keep soil evenly moist, not waterlogged. Germination commonly takes 1–3 weeks around 65–75°F.
- Thin seedlings to approximately 12–18 inches apart to allow branching and airflow.
- For an earlier start, sow in individual pots indoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost. Gradually acclimate seedlings outdoors before transplanting.
Care
- Water regularly while plants establish, then water during dry spells. Allow the soil surface to begin drying between waterings.
- Use well-draining potting mix for containers and check moisture more often in hot weather.
- Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can encourage foliage at the expense of flowers.
- Remove spent blooms and developing seeds to keep plants tidy and limit self-seeding.
- Plants are bushy rather than climbing and do not need a trellis.
- Protect from frost. In cold climates, developed tuberous roots can be lifted and stored in a cool, dry, frost-free place for winter.
Garden Safety
For ornamental growing only. Seeds and plant parts are harmful if eaten. Keep away from children and pets, and wash hands after handling.
