Grow globe-shaped, papery flowers for garden borders and homegrown bouquets with this pack of 100 mixed globe amaranth seeds. Gomphrena thrives in warm, sunny growing conditions and is a favorite for fresh and dried arrangements.
Features
- Package: 100 seeds for planting.
- Botanical name: Gomphrena globosa.
- Random mixed colors.
- Warm-season annual with upright, branching growth.
- Suitable for sunny borders, cutting gardens, and containers with drainage.
- Seeds only; live plants, cut flowers, pots, and accessories are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected spring frost, or direct sow outdoors after frost danger has passed and soil is warm.
- Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours before sowing to help soften the seed covering.
- Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep in clean, well-draining seed-starting mix and cover lightly.
- Keep around 70–80°F. Maintain even moisture without waterlogging; germination commonly takes 10–21 days and can be irregular.
- After emergence, provide bright light and good airflow. Pot up seedlings when they have several true leaves if needed.
- Gradually acclimate indoor-grown seedlings outdoors for 7–10 days.
- Transplant approximately 9–12 inches apart in well-drained soil once frost danger has passed.
Care
- Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Water regularly during establishment. Once rooted, water during dry spells, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
- Avoid standing water and heavy, persistently wet soil.
- Feed lightly with a balanced flower fertilizer according to its label if needed. Excessive nitrogen encourages foliage over flowers.
- Pinch young growing tips once plants are well established to encourage branching.
- Harvest flowers or remove spent heads regularly to encourage continued flowering.
- Support stems only if needed in windy locations. No climbing trellis is required.
- Protect from frost.
Fresh & Dried Flowers
- Cut fully developed, fresh flower heads on firm stems with clean scissors.
- For fresh bouquets, remove leaves below the waterline and place stems promptly in clean water.
- For drying, remove excess foliage, gather small bundles, and hang upside down in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated space.
