Sowing Instructions

1. Direct-sow outdoors after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 50°F (10°C).
2. Choose full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight and well-draining soil. Loosen the soil and mix in compost before sowing.
3. Sow approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep and water gently.
4. Keep soil evenly moist until seedlings establish. Germination commonly takes 7–14 days, depending on temperature and conditions.
5. Thin seedlings to approximately 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) apart, allowing extra room for vigorous plants.
6. Protect newly sown seeds and young seedlings from birds, slugs, and snails.

Staking & Support

Sunflowers are not climbing vines and do not need a climbing trellis. Tall plants and heavy flower heads may need sturdy stakes, particularly in windy gardens. Install supports early beside the plants and secure stems loosely with soft ties as they grow. Check ties regularly so they do not cut into thickening stems.

Care

• Water deeply at the base when the soil begins to dry, especially during hot weather and flower development.
• Keep the growing area weed-free and add a light layer of mulch, leaving space around the stems.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
• Choose a position sheltered from strong winds without sacrificing sunlight.
• Remove finished annual plants at the end of the season.
