Add pincushion-style flowers to a sunny border or cutting garden with this pack of 100 double purple scabiosa seeds. Slender, upright stems bring an airy touch to cottage-style plantings and homegrown bouquets.

Features

  • Package: 100 seeds for planting.
  • Common names: Scabiosa and pincushion flower.
  • Double purple flowers for borders and cutting beds.
  • Upright flowering plants; no climbing trellis required.
  • Life cycle and winter hardiness depend on the species and climate. Some scabiosa are perennial, while others are grown as annuals.
  • Seeds only; live plants, cut flowers, and containers are not included.

Sowing Instructions

  1. Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected spring frost, or direct sow after frost danger has passed.
  2. Use clean, well-draining seed-starting mix. Sow shallowly and cover lightly with approximately 1/8 inch of mix.
  3. Keep around 65–70°F and evenly moist, not waterlogged. Germination commonly takes 10–21 days but can vary.
  4. Provide bright light as soon as seedlings emerge. Transplant into individual pots once they have several true leaves.
  5. Gradually acclimate indoor-grown seedlings outdoors for 7–10 days before planting out.
  6. Space plants approximately 12–18 inches apart in well-drained soil, allowing room for airflow.

Care

  • Choose full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Plant in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid heavy, persistently wet ground, especially in winter.
  • Water regularly while seedlings establish. Once established, water when the soil surface begins to dry; avoid standing water.
  • Apply a light feeding of balanced flower fertilizer according to its label if needed. Excess nitrogen can encourage leafy growth instead of flowers.
  • Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continued flowering and limit unwanted self-seeding.
  • In windy locations, use small stakes or flower-support netting if taller stems lean.
  • Keep fallen debris cleared and maintain airflow around plants. Avoid burying plant crowns under wet mulch.
  • Where plants overwinter successfully, remove dead growth as new growth begins in spring.

Cut Flower Tips

Cut stems when flowers are freshly open, using clean snips. Remove foliage below the waterline and place stems promptly in clean water. Regular cutting also helps keep the planting tidy.
