About Seed-Grown Dahlias
Dahlias grown from seed vary in flower color, shape, and plant size. Named varieties such as 'Labyrinth' are maintained through vegetative propagation; these seeds are not a guarantee of true-to-type 'Labyrinth' flowers. Photos are illustrative and do not promise identical blooms.
Sowing Instructions
- Start indoors about 6–8 weeks before your last expected spring frost.
- Sow approximately ¼ inch (6 mm) deep in moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Keep around 65–75°F (18–24°C), with the mix evenly moist but not soggy. Germination often takes 1–3 weeks, though timing varies.
- Provide bright light once seedlings emerge. Move into individual pots after they develop true leaves and can be handled safely.
- Gradually acclimate seedlings outdoors, then transplant after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed.
- Allow room between plants for airflow and their developing growth.
Staking & Support
Dahlias are not climbing vines and do not need a climbing trellis. Install sturdy stakes or a plant-support cage at planting time for taller plants. Secure stems loosely with soft ties as they grow, supporting flowering branches without constricting them.
Care & Overwintering
- Choose full sun and fertile, well-draining soil.
- Water at the soil level to keep roots evenly moist, avoiding standing water.
- Pinch the growing tip once plants are well established to encourage branching.
- Remove faded blooms regularly and check tender growth for slugs, snails, and aphids.
- In cold climates, lift developed tubers after frost blackens the foliage. Let them dry, then store in a cool, frost-free place and check periodically for rot or shriveling.
- Where winters are mild, protect plants from cold and wet soil. Perennial survival depends on climate and winter care.
