Bring tall flower spires to the back of a sunny border with Carnival Mix double hollyhock seeds. These cottage-garden favorites add vertical interest along fences and garden walls.
Features
- Package: 120+ seeds for planting.
- Botanical name: Alcea rosea.
- Double-flowered hollyhock mix.
- Random mixed colors.
- Usually grown as a biennial or short-lived perennial. Plants often form a leafy rosette in the first year and flower in the second.
- Seeds only; live plants, cut flowers, and supports are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Direct sow after the last spring frost, or in late summer where seedlings have time to establish before winter.
- For indoor starts, sow in individual deep pots 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost to reduce taproot disturbance.
- Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep in clean seed-starting mix or finely prepared, well-drained garden soil.
- Keep around 65–75°F and evenly moist, not waterlogged. Germination commonly takes 10–21 days.
- Provide bright light after emergence. Gradually acclimate indoor seedlings outdoors for 7–10 days before transplanting after frost danger has passed.
- Transplant while young with the root ball intact. Space plants approximately 18–24 inches apart for good airflow.
Care & Support
- Choose full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily and fertile, well-drained soil.
- Water regularly during establishment, then deeply during dry spells. Water at soil level to avoid prolonged wet foliage.
- Work compost into the soil before planting. Feed moderately with a balanced flower fertilizer according to its label if needed.
- Stake tall flower stalks early in windy locations, using loose, soft ties. Hollyhocks grow upright and do not climb.
- Inspect leaf undersides for orange-brown rust spots. Remove affected leaves promptly, clear fallen debris, and avoid crowding.
- Remove faded flowers to keep plants tidy and reduce self-seeding, or leave selected seed heads to mature.
- Cut back spent flower stalks after flowering. Keep crowns free of soggy mulch and standing water over winter.
- Wear gloves if plant hairs irritate your skin.
