Sowing Instructions

1. Direct-sow outdoors after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 50°F.
2. Choose a location with 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Loosen the soil and mix in compost.
3. Sow approximately ½–1 inch deep, then water gently.
4. Keep soil evenly moist until seedlings establish. Germination commonly takes 7–14 days in suitable conditions.
5. Thin seedlings to approximately 12–18 inches apart for room to develop and good airflow.
6. For container growing, sow in a roomy pot with drainage holes and well-draining potting mix. Avoid overcrowding.
7. Protect newly sown seeds and young seedlings from birds, slugs, and snails.

Care

• Water at soil level when the top inch of soil begins to dry. Check containers more often during hot weather.
• Avoid standing water and keep competing weeds clear.
• Feed container plants according to the fertilizer label, avoiding excessive nitrogen.
• Place pots in a sheltered, sunny position. Use a small stake and loose, soft ties if a stem begins to lean.
• Remove spent flowers for a tidy appearance, or leave mature heads for garden birds.
• Remove finished annual plants at the end of the growing season.
