Bring fragrant flower spikes to a cool-season border or cutting garden with this pack of 50 mixed column stock seeds. Their upright growth adds a classic cottage-garden touch and provides stems for homegrown bouquets.
Features
- Package: 50 seeds for planting.
- Botanical name: Matthiola incana.
- Common name: Column stock.
- Random mixed colors.
- Cool-season flowers, commonly grown as annuals.
- Seeds only; live plants, cut flowers, and containers are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected spring frost. In mild-winter areas, late-summer or fall sowing can provide a cool-weather growing season.
- Sow approximately 1/8 inch deep in clean, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Keep around 65–70°F and evenly moist, not waterlogged. Germination commonly takes 7–14 days.
- Provide bright light after emergence and grow seedlings in cool, airy conditions. Avoid excessive heat.
- Transplant seedlings while young, handling the root ball gently.
- Gradually acclimate indoor starts outdoors for 7–10 days before planting. Protect young plants from hard freezes.
- Space plants approximately 8–12 inches apart in well-drained soil.
Care & Support
- Choose full sun; light afternoon shade can help where spring temperatures rise quickly.
- Grow in fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost. Stock performs best in cool weather and may decline in summer heat.
- Keep soil evenly moist without standing water. Water at soil level and allow airflow around plants.
- Apply a balanced flower fertilizer according to its label if needed. Avoid excessive nitrogen.
- Do not pinch column stock if you want a strong central flower spike.
- Use flower-support netting or small stakes if stems lean in an exposed location. These are upright plants, not climbing vines.
- Check for aphids and caterpillars, and remove damaged foliage and spent flower stems.
Cut Flower Tips
Cut stems when several lower flowers on the spike have opened. Use clean snips, remove leaves below the waterline, and place stems promptly in clean water. Column stock is generally grown for its main flowering stem rather than repeated cut-and-come-again harvests.
Seed Disclaimer
Germination is affected by temperature, environment, and planting techniques. We sell seeds only and do not guarantee 100% germination.
