Begin a long-term garden project with mixed climbing rose seeds. Enjoy nurturing young rose plants and training their developing canes along a trellis, arch, or garden fence.
Features
- Plant: Climbing rose, Rosa.
- Random mixed colors.
- Perennial flowering shrub with long canes that need tying to a support.
- Suitable for sunny garden positions with room for training and airflow.
- Seeds only; live plants, bare roots, pots, and supports are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Soak seeds in clean water for 12–24 hours before starting.
- Mix seeds with lightly moist vermiculite or seed-starting medium in a labeled, sealed bag. Refrigerate at approximately 35–41°F (2–5°C) for 8–12 weeks. Do not freeze.
- Check weekly for mold, drying, or sprouting. Pot up any sprouted seeds promptly.
- Sow approximately ¼ inch (6 mm) deep in clean, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Keep around 65–70°F (18–21°C) with gentle, even moisture. Germination can be slow and uneven; some seeds require additional seasonal temperature cycles.
- Provide bright light after emergence. Pot on carefully once seedlings have several true leaves and established roots.
- Gradually acclimate young plants outdoors before transplanting after frost danger has passed.
Trellis Support & Training
- Install a sturdy, securely anchored trellis, arch, or wire support before plants become large.
- Roses do not cling or twine on their own. Fasten canes loosely with soft garden ties.
- Guide flexible main canes outward or near-horizontal where practical to encourage flowering side shoots.
- Leave space between foliage and walls for airflow. Check ties regularly as stems thicken.
- Wear gloves when handling thorny growth.
Care
- Choose a position with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight and fertile, well-draining soil.
- Water deeply at soil level while plants establish, keeping foliage dry where possible.
- Mulch around the root area without piling mulch against stems.
- Feed established plants with rose fertilizer according to the label.
- Remove dead, damaged, or diseased canes. Avoid heavy pruning of young plants while the main framework develops.
- Monitor for aphids and leaf disease, and clear fallen diseased leaves.
- Growing roses from seed takes patience; allow time for establishment before flowering.
