Grow crisp, succulent greens for your kitchen garden with Golden Purslane. Its tender leaves and young stems have a mild, tangy flavor suited to fresh salads and cooked dishes.
Features
- Package: 600 seeds for planting.
- Botanical name: Portulaca oleracea, cultivated edible purslane.
- Warm-season annual with fleshy leaves and spreading growth.
- Suitable for sunny vegetable beds, raised beds, and containers with drainage.
- Seeds only; live plants, harvested greens, pots, and accessories are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Direct sow outdoors after the last spring frost when the soil is warm. Aim for soil temperatures around 70–85°F.
- Prepare a fine, well-drained seedbed, or fill containers with a well-draining potting mix.
- Scatter seeds thinly on the surface and press gently into place. Do not bury deeply; light helps germination.
- Mist gently to avoid washing away the tiny seeds. Keep the surface lightly moist until seedlings emerge, without waterlogging.
- Germination commonly takes 7–14 days in warm conditions but may take longer.
- Thin established seedlings to approximately 6–8 inches apart. For successive harvests, sow small batches every 2–3 weeks during warm weather.
Care
- Choose full sun and well-drained soil. Avoid standing water and heavy, persistently wet soil.
- Although established purslane tolerates dry spells, water moderately for tender eating quality. Let the soil surface dry slightly between waterings.
- Keep weeds clear while seedlings establish. Avoid heavy feeding; modest compost is usually sufficient.
- Allow room for spreading stems. No trellis or climbing support is needed.
- Harvest regularly and remove flower buds before seed capsules mature to limit self-seeding.
- Protect from frost. Containers can help keep this spreading plant within its intended growing area.
Harvest & Kitchen Use
- Harvest young leaves and tender shoot tips once plants are established and have enough growth to spare.
- Snip stems above a leaf joint, leaving several inches of growth for regrowth.
- Wash thoroughly before use. Enjoy tender growth in salads or add it to soups, stir-fries, and other cooked dishes.
- Refrigerate harvested greens promptly. Consume only positively identified edible purslane; do not mix in unidentified garden weeds.
Seed Disclaimer
Germination is affected by temperature, environment, and planting techniques. We sell seeds only and do not guarantee 100% germination.
