Start a cottage-garden favorite with this pack of 200+ deep burgundy cornflower seeds. Also known as bachelor's buttons, these annual flowers suit sunny borders and cutting gardens.
Features
- Package: 200+ seeds for planting.
- Botanical name: Centaurea cyanus.
- Annual flowering plant with upright stems.
- Suitable for garden borders and fresh-cut bouquets.
- Seeds only; live plants, cut flowers, pots, and accessories are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Direct sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked. In mild-winter climates, fall sowing is another option.
- Choose full sun and well-drained soil. Rake the seedbed fine and remove weeds.
- Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep, cover lightly, and water gently.
- Keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Germination commonly takes 7–14 days around 60–70°F.
- Thin seedlings to approximately 8–12 inches apart for airflow and room to grow.
- If starting indoors, sow in individual pots 3–4 weeks before planting out. Acclimate seedlings gradually and transplant while young with minimal root disturbance.
Care
- Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Water regularly during establishment. Once rooted, water during dry spells without leaving soil soggy.
- Avoid excessive fertilizer, especially nitrogen, which can encourage weak, leafy growth.
- Remove spent blooms to encourage continued flowering and limit unwanted self-seeding.
- Support stems with small stakes or flower-support netting in windy locations if needed. No climbing trellis is required.
- Keep weeds clear and allow good airflow. Water at soil level where possible.
- For bouquets, cut stems in the cool morning when flowers have just opened and place promptly in clean water.
- Flowering may slow in intense summer heat.
