Start an aquatic gardening project with this pack of 35 bowl lotus seeds. Grow seedlings in warm water before planting them in soil-filled, watertight containers for a sunny patio water garden.

Features

  • Package: 35 seeds for planting.
  • Plant group: Nelumbo, commonly known as lotus.
  • Aquatic perennial for sunny water gardens and suitable containers.
  • Seed-grown lotus needs time to establish; flowering may take more than one growing season.
  • Seeds only; live plants, bowls, soil, and accessories are not included.

Seed Preparation & Germination

  1. Hold each seed securely and gently file a small patch of the hard outer shell at the rounded end, opposite the pointed tip. Stop when the lighter inner layer becomes visible; do not cut into the embryo.
  2. Place prepared seeds in a clean container of water kept around 75–85°F. Do not use boiling water.
  3. Change the water daily and rinse the container gently. Remove any seeds that become soft or rotten.
  4. Seeds often swell and sprout within 1–2 weeks after proper scarification, although timing varies.
  5. Keep seedlings in a bright, warm location. Handle emerging roots and shoots carefully.

Transplanting

  1. Once seedlings have several leaves and developing roots, transfer them gently into individual watertight containers with no drainage holes.
  2. Use heavy loam or aquatic planting soil rather than light potting mix, which can float and cloud the water.
  3. Anchor roots gently in the soil, keeping the growing tip exposed. Do not force or bend fragile shoots.
  4. Begin with approximately 2–4 inches of water above the soil and keep leaves able to reach the surface. Adjust depth gradually as plants establish.
  5. Choose a wide container with room for rhizome growth, and move plants into larger containers if they become crowded.

Care

  • Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun daily during active growth. Gradually acclimate young seedlings to outdoor sun.
  • Maintain the water level so soil never dries out. Add water gently without disturbing the roots.
  • Wait until plants are established and producing upright leaves before feeding. Use an aquatic fertilizer according to its label, keeping it away from tender growing tips.
  • Remove yellowing leaves only when their stems are above the waterline; avoid cutting healthy hollow stems below water.
  • Protect seedlings from frost. During dormancy, keep rhizomes moist and prevent containers from freezing solid; winter protection depends on local climate and plant hardiness.
  • Keep plants contained and do not release seeds or plant material into natural waterways.
  • For ornamental growing. Planting seeds are not intended for eating.
