Bring tall flower spires to a sunny cottage garden with black hollyhock seeds. Plant along a fence or at the back of a border, where upright stems can add height without crowding smaller flowers.
Features
- Package: 5g of seeds for planting; sold by weight, not seed count.
- Botanical name: Alcea rosea.
- Common name: Black hollyhock.
- Usually grown as a biennial or short-lived perennial.
- Often forms a leafy rosette in its first year and flowers in its second year.
- Seeds only; live plants, cut flowers, and supports are not included.
Sowing Instructions
- Direct sow after the last spring frost, or sow in late summer where seedlings have time to establish before winter.
- For indoor starts, sow in individual deep pots 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost to minimize disturbance to the taproot.
- Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep in clean seed-starting mix or finely prepared, well-drained garden soil.
- Keep around 65–75°F and evenly moist, not waterlogged. Germination commonly takes 10–21 days.
- Provide bright light after emergence. Gradually acclimate indoor seedlings outdoors for 7–10 days before transplanting after frost danger has passed.
- Transplant while young, keeping the root ball intact. Space plants approximately 18–24 inches apart for airflow.
Care & Support
- Choose full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily and fertile, well-drained soil.
- Water regularly during establishment, then deeply during dry spells. Water at soil level rather than wetting the foliage.
- Add compost before planting. Feed moderately with a balanced flower fertilizer according to its label if needed.
- Stake tall flowering stems early in exposed locations, securing them with loose, soft ties. Hollyhocks are upright plants, not climbing vines.
- Watch for hollyhock rust, especially orange-brown spots on leaf undersides. Remove affected leaves promptly, clear fallen debris, and maintain good airflow.
- Remove spent flowers to keep plants tidy and limit self-seeding, or allow selected seed heads to mature.
- Cut back spent flower stalks after flowering. Keep plant crowns free of soggy mulch and standing water over winter.
- Wear gloves if plant hairs irritate your skin.
